We cut a hole in the wall to investigate the area under the stairs. This is the hole. It's a huge area and fairly clean. The cats want to play in it! It may become a kitty room, or maybe a nice office storage place. The hole is currently covered with a plastic mesh that I stapled to keep cats out.
